TROOP TRIBUNE

TROOP 464
DECEMBER 1998
MINUTES OF PLC MEETING
Date of Meeting: Nov. 1, 1998 @ 4:00 p.m.
Present: Chris Balian, SPL; Brian Ballew, ASPL; Bryan Marks, Patrol Leader; Cory Fischer,
Patrol Leader
First order of business was the planning of troop meetings for the
month of November. The following schedule was decided:
Nov. 4 - completion of Cinematography Merit Badge
Nov. 11 - no meeting due to Veterans Day Observance
Nov. 18 - Mountain Biking Presentation
Nov. 25 - First aid/Emergency Prep. Merit Badge completion
The next business was discussion of the Eagle Project of Rajesh
Jaganath which takes place on Nov. 21, 1998. This will be the monthly outing since this
month
is a holiday month. Chris Balian will call Rajesh to appear at the next meeting to discuss
his project with the troop. The discussion then moved to the activities in December. The
Troop meetings of Dec. 2 & 9 will be left open and will be determined at the next PLC
meeting. This will depend on how well we complete the merit badge work in November. The
meeting of Dec. 16 will be the election of the new SPL for the next period. It was decided
that the new SPL will take control on Jan. 6, 1999. This will give him the opportunity to
learn the position during the month of December.
The next business was the Scouting for Food program scheduled for Nov.
Karens Cub Scout Pack will put out the bags on Nov. 7 and we will pick up on Nov.
14. We need plenty of Scouts and drivers for this.
Finally, it was discussed that over the past several outings, only one
third of the Scouts attended. It was discussed that more input was needed from the Scouts
through the Scout corner in order to help the Scout leaders plan the outings.
There being no further business, the meeting was closed at 6:00 p.m.

THE SCOUT LAW
The Scout Law is the foundation upon which the entire Scouting
movement is built. The points of the law are a guide by which every Scout tries to live.
The Scout Law is a statement of facts.

A Scout is CHEERFUL . A Scout looks for the bright side of life. He
cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"The people no longer believe in principles, but will probably
periodically believe in saviors."
Jacob Christoph Burkhardt
THE BRIDGE BUILDER
An old man traveling a long highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm vast and deep and wide.
The sullen stream held no fears for him;
But he turned when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old Man," cried a fellow pilgrim near,
"Youre wasting your time in building here,
Your journey will end with the closing day;
You never again will pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm deep and wide,
Why build you this bridge at even tide?"
The builder lifted his gray old head;
"Good friend, in the path I come," he said.
"There followeth after me today,
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This stream which has been as naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

THE SCOUTMASTER
There isnt any pay for you, you serve without reward,
The boys who tramp the fields with you but little could afford,
And yet your pay is richer far than those who toil for gold,
For in a dozen different ways your service shall be told.
Youll read it in the faces of a troop of growing boys,
Youll read it in the pleasure of a dozen manly joys,
And down the distant future - you will surely read it then,
Emblazoned through the service of a band of loyal men.
Five years of willing labor and of brothering a troop,
Five years of trudging highways, with the Indian cry and whoop,
Five years of camping fires burning, not alone for pleasures sake,
But the future generations which the boys are soon to make.
They have no gold to give you, but when age comes on to you,
Theyll give you back the splendid things you taught them how to do,
Theyll give you rich contentment and a thrill of honest pride,
And youll see your nation prosper, and youll all be satisfied.

EDITORS NOTE
1998, well its coming to an end. I do hope everyone has had a
good year. Troop 464 has had a very busy schedule. We as leaders are very busy also, with
that I can say HELP. I dont usually try to speak for others, but I am sure that a
few others will agree with me, when I say that we would like to see others get more
closely involved. Every little bit helps.
Yours in Scouting,
David Ballew, ASM
