SCOUTMASTER’S CORNER

I would like to first thank you all for selecting me for the position of Scoutmaster of this Troop. I have in the past enjoyed being an Assistant Leader and now look forward to this new position. We are blessed with a great bunch of scouts of all ages along with a very dedicated adult staff. Our Troop has increased in size with the bridging of about 11 new scouts. We are working with the older boys in getting their Eagle Rank, and our Troop has been doing new and exciting things. All in all, this equals a very vibrant and forward moving Troop.

My philosophy is quite simple, let the scouts run the Troop and have fun. We as adults are there to give them support and guidance (and to make sure they don’t do anything illegal or anything that would injure themselves). Again, thank you for this position. I look forward to an exciting time for Troop 464.

Alex Balian
Scoutmaster

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"Things are more like they are now than they ever were before."
Dwight D. Eisenhower

INTERNET ADDRESS

OK, so I did the newsletter rather hurriedly last month. Hope you didn’t notice my errors. However, I still need the Internet addresses for those who are willing to share it with others in the Troop. So far I have had only 1 response, thank you Karen. If you would like faster information flow, please send your Internet address to Judy Osborne at josbo59055@aol.com.

Don’t forget, our Troop’s address is www.markv.com/troop464

IN THE MAILBOX

The man who made it didn’t use it, he sold it. The man who bought it gave it to another man. The man he gave it to didn’t know he was using it. What is it?

THE SCOUT LAW

The Scout Law is the foundation upon which the entire Scouting movement is built. The points of the law are a guide by which every Scout tries to live.

The Scout Law is a statement of facts.

"A Scout is trustworthy ...loyal ...helpful ...friendly ...courteous ...kind ...obedient ...cheerful ...thrifty ...brave ...clean ...reverent."

By doing all you can to live up to the Scout Law, you are a Scout. If you should willfully break the Scout Law, you violate the spirit of Scouting.

The ideals of the Scout Law are very high. Strive to live by them, and you will excel on your own and as a part of your Scout troop, community, and nation.

A Scout if HELPFUL. A Scout is concerned about other people. He willingly volunteers to help others without expecting payment or reward.

In pledging yourself to the Scout Oath, you promise TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES. The Scout motto asks you to BE PREPARED. The Scout slogan reminds you to DO A GOOD TURN DAILY. These three ideals work together: you promise to help, you can help because you have learned how, and you do help because you care about all the people.

SUMMER CAMP

This year Troop 464 is going to summer camp at Pico Blanco which is by Monterey, CA. I hear it is a beautiful camp. Prior to arriving at the camp, we will be touring the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which from my prior experience, is quite a trip.

I learned from the camp that Mr. El Nino has made its mark by increasing the mosquito population, so bring plenty of insect repellent. A little tip I learned was that if you take Vitamin B2 a week prior, the odor that you would emit, (which is undetectable to us) keeps the bugs away.

I will be making future announcements and give more information about the trip in the newsletters in the future.

Alex Balian,
Scoutmaster

EDITOR’S NOTE

As we make our way along the Scouting trail, we are asked to do tasks within the Troop. Such as help train and teach the younger boys, as you were taught. So, if you are asked to help...think about the others that have helped and taught you. The boys that you are teaching will be the teachers of the future. A great deal depends on your attitude and ability, so listen and learn, then go out and teach what you have learned. This past weekend was very busy with the Venture Crew on a backpacking trip, and the new boys on an excursion of their own. We had a good time and learned a lot. A special thanks to Karen, Brian, and Corky, for their assistance on the hike with the new boys.

Yours in Scouting,
