QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"I dont know anything about luck. Ive never banked on it, and
Im afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: hard work -- and realizing
what is opportunity and what isnt."
Lucille Ball, 1911-1989
Actress and Comedian

McGRATH BEACH TROOP CAMPOUT
The troop activity for the month of June will be a campout at Mc Grath State Beach. We
leave June 5 and return on June 7 around noon. This is a fun outing where swimming,
running around, and eating will be the order of the day. All Scout are encouraged to come
and participate in the fun, especially the younger Scouts. There will be opportunities for
rank advancements for the younger, and merit badge work for the older Scouts. The total
cost is $10 (includes camp site cost and food).

VOLUNTEERS
The American Legion is asking for volunteers to help paint the United States map in
front of the building on June 13th. Also on that day we will be placing small flags around
the neighborhood in honor of Flag Day on June 14th. If you are interested in helping,
please contact Mr. Bladow.

The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special
significance, not only in Scouting, but also as he enters higher education, business, or
industry, and community service. Not every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle
Scout rank; only about 2.5 percent of all Boy Scouts do so. More than one million Boy
Scouts have earned the rank since the year 1911!!! Ask not what Scouting can do for you,
but what you can do for Scouting.

THE AMERICANS CREED
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the
people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a
democracy in a Republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States, a perfect Union, one
and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and
humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore
believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its
laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

THE SCOUT LAW
The Scout Law is the foundation upon which the entire Scouting movement is built. The
points of the law are a guide by which every Scout tries to live.
The Scout Law is a statement of facts.
"A Scout is trustworthy ...loyal ...helpful ...friendly ...courteous ...kind
...obedient ...cheerful ...thrifty ...brave ...clean ...reverent."
By doing all you can to live up to the Scout Law, you are a Scout. If you should willfully
break the Scout Law, you violate the spirit of Scouting.
The ideals of the Scout Law are very high. Strive to live by them, and you will excel on
your own and as a part of your Scout troop, community, and nation.
A Scout is Loyal. A Scout is true to his family, friends, Scout leaders, schools, nation, and world community.

SCOUTMASTERS CORNER
This letter is written for those parents who are sending their son to summer camp, 1998.
Every year Troop 464 has gone to summer camp, whether that camp is in our council or in an
out of council camp. This year Troop 464 will be going to a camp within the Monterey Bay
Area Council. That camp is called Pico Blanco. Years ago Troop 464 made rather frequent
visits to this camp. Pico Blanco is located twelve miles south of Carmel and only thirteen
miles from the coast. The camp is located within the Los Padres National Forest and
borders on the Ventana Wilderness area. The dates for this years Summer Camp 98 is
August 2 -8. The cost will be $160 per boy, and is due by June 3, 1998. It is important
that this fee be turned in by June 3rd because the Troop must pay the fees by June 15th.
Right now I encourage the parents to think of this opportunity to send their boy to summer camp. His outdoor experience and skills will be increased and he will have fun learning them. For the older boys, there are challenges that will stimulate them toward new growth and higher goals. As for the leaders, this will be a time to reflect, relax, enjoy the scenery, and help the boys reach their potential and expectations.
So one again, please forward your fees to our treasurer (Karen Osterheldt) so that she can promptly credit your account. If some of you have a credit because of the canceled ski trip in February, make sure that the treasurer know so we dont have to seek you out.
Sincerely,
Steven Andress
Scoutmaster
RECIPES FOR DUTCH OVEN
Oven-fried Squirrel
Wash and wipe the squirrels with a vinegar-soaked cloth.
Cut into serving pieces. Prepare a mixture of 1 slightly beaten egg, 1 1/2 teaspoons
pepper, 2 tablespoons water, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Dip pieces of meat into mixture and
roll in fine bread crumbs. Brown in preheated oven with a chunk of melted suet (hard fat
from cattle or sheep). Cover and cook slowly until done.
Serve on boiled rice with brown gravy if you like. To make gravy, drain off all fat in pan except 3 tablespoons. Blend in 3 tablespoons flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring until brown, boiling a couple of minutes. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of hot water or pan juice.

EDITORS NOTE
Congratulations are in order for our new elected officers. Good luck in your
endeavors. El Nino seems to have put a damper on the entire first six months of the year.
Several things on the calendar have already been canceled or rescheduled. Perhaps the
second half will be better.
On May 23, 1998, we went to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. I was impressed that so many young men and women in the Scouting family were there to take part in the placing of flags at the grave sites of our fallen veterans. Four boys from our own troop participated. At the ceremony, the Americans Creed was read out of the Boy Scout handbook, it was a very touching moment.
Yours in Scouting,
