TROOP TRIBUNE
TROOP 464 MARCH 1998

SCOUTMASTER’S NOTE

Scouts,

Just to remind parents and boys of Troop 464 of some upcoming events.

The canoe trip between April 4 - 9, 1998 on the Colorado River is in the planning stages. If your son or you or both would like to go, please see the Scoutmaster by March 1st (IMMEDIATELY). Cost is $100, which includes transportation and food.

Camporee is just around the corner at the end of April. It will be held at Tapia Park on April 24 - 26, 1998. All boys need to attend to support their patrols.

Summer camp is scheduled for Aug. 2 - 8, 1998 at Pico Blanco. This camp is located in Monterey County near the coast. This is reported to be a beautiful camp. Sign-ups are in progress. Cost is $160 per boy. If the Troop pays the fees before June 1, 1998, there will be a $5 per boy rebate. Please sign-up now to reserve your space. Based on the signs, as of now only adults will be going to summer camp, no boys. So, boys you best claim your space! Wait, maybe adults only is not a bad idea!

Yours in Scouting,
Steven Andress
Scoutmaster 464

CANOE TRIP - PARDEE SEA BASE

Saturday, March 21, 1998 is once again, the fun filled, action packed, and highly challenging canoe trip at the Pardee Sea Base at Marina Del Rey. All who are planning to take the canoe trip down the Colorado River in April must attend this outing. NO EXCEPTIONS! This outing will not only work on our canoe skills, but match up scouts to row together.

I would also like all adult leaders who are planning to canoe with the scouts to attend, since you will also need to work on your skills.

The trip, like last time, will be one day. Scouts, bring your lunch or money to buy sandwiches at the local Ralph’s in the Marina. We will return at 4:00 p.m.

This will be a fun trip, for we will tour the whole Marina Del Rey via canoe. Who know, the Laker Girls may visit us again (Chris, watch out, this time, where you’re walking when the girls pass by).

Further announcements will follow.
Alex Balian, ASM

SOLVANG CENTURY

Hi, everyone. Well, the Solvang Century is upon us again! This year looks like it’ll be at least as much fun as last year. Maybe even more, due to the fact that we’ll probably all get wet! Rain, rain, rain....BE PREPARED!!! Other than that, we all need to be out riding our bikes to get ready for the ride. Try to get on it every day if you can. Most people can just jump on a bike and ride 50 miles without too much trouble. But, those of us who have prepared for it will find it much less painful the next day!

Looking forward to the ride,
John Luker, ASM

SCRIBE’S CORNER

The Solvang Century is a great way to get your biking merit badge. There is little to do, and it is all fun. All you have to do is go on a few 25 mile bike rides (which isn’t that far) and then, only two 50 milers. The Solvang Century is a great way to knock off the 50 milers. You can either go on the 100 mile part or go 2 years in a row and do the 50 miler. It’s not that hard. Our troop has the best time there. Solvang is one of the coolest places to go bike riding. It is very cool and also an awesome sight to look at. So, go and ask your Scoutmaster about it and beg him to let you go. Trust me, it kicks! I’ll see you there.

Sincerely,
Bryan Marks, Scribe

IN THE MAILBOX

It is easy to join a Scout troop, but it is not so easy to live up to the ideals of Scouting. For that, you need Courage and Determination.

In some ways, Scouting is like a game with rules you must follow to be a member of the team. The rules of Scouting are found in the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto, and Scout Slogan. It is by following these rules that you can become a true Scout.

THANK YOU LETTER

Dear American Legion,

Thank you for the three Dutch ovens and for the steel Dutch oven openers. They are very useful in our troop. We enjoy them a lot. Our troop is very lucky to have your support and care for us. We really appreciate it. The boys like it when your volunteers, who were also Boy Scouts, come to our meetings and talk to us. The things they tell us are very interesting. So, thanks again for everything and come visit us when ever you can.

Sincerely,
Troop 464

EDITOR’S NOTE

I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the newsletter. Some have gotten recognition and some have not. And a special thanks to someone who should be getting more credit than she is, to you, Judy, I thank you. Please keep up the GREAT work.

It has come to my attention over the past several months that in the closing of our troop meetings, there is one who stands out predominately, that is THE GREAT SCOUTMASTER. I do believe that there are some very great Scoutmasters. In a recent issue of Scouting magazine, I came across an article that interested me. Upon reading it, I found that the Great Scoutmaster was not the Great Scoutmaster, but he/she is the Great Master. In short,

"May the Great Master of all Scouts be with us till we meet again."
