TROOP TRIBUNE

TROOP 464
SEPTEMBER 1998

SCOUTMASTER’S CORNER

I hope all Scouts and parents have had a great summer.

Troop 464 has had a very busy one. Summer Camp 98, at Camp Pico Blanco, was quite an experience. After traveling to Monterey, CA and visiting the Aquarium, we (16 Scouts and 5 Adult leaders) arrived at the camp on Sunday. The camp was, in my opinion, one of the nicest and most beautiful camps around. It had tall trees, streams, swimming holes, fishing holes, and pretty good food (with the exception of the "Pico Paste"). The Scouts accomplished rank advancements, earned merit badges, and most important, had a good time. Many thanks to the adult leaders (Scott Hastie, John Lucker, and Carol and Herman Fisher) for their help.

The month of August had other activities as well. The Venture Crew with the adult leadership of Dave Rozelle, hiked up to the White Mountains in the Owens Valley area. I received a cell phone call from my son, Chris, at the top of the mountain, 14,000 ft. up.

The month concluded with the family picnic and campout at the Tehachappi Mountains. Many thanks to Nolan Street for allowing us, once again, to camp out and use the great facilities. THANKS Nolan!!!!!

The month of September we had the Eagle Project of Ryan B. It also had the start of SCHOOL (sorry about that guys).

The Troop is still in full speed ahead mode with many activities planned by the boy leadership of the Troop. I look forward to the balance of the year with some exciting times.

We just received our reservation for summer camp at Emerald Bay in Catalina Island for next summer. The dates will be June 27 thru July 3. The cost will be $305 per Scout. However, we have formed a fundraising committee to help defray the cost of the camp. More information will be coming out as available.

Yours in Scouting,

Alex Balian, Scoutmaster

VENTURE CREW NEWS

August saw quite an adventure for the Troop 464 Venture Crew! Our outing consisted of a visit to the picturesque Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest where we worked with Mr. Luker composing many pictures for the Photography merit badge. There is no better place anywhere for great pictures. The next day we were successful in our ascent of White Mountain Peak, at 14,246 feet high. It is the third highest peak and the highest desert peak in California. After the 14-mile hike all were tired. But, after an eventful return to camp ( Mr. Rozelle blew a tire), were treated to a wonderful foil chicken dinner. Another flat tire brought us home, safe and sound, ready to tackle other mountains.

TROOP 464 WEB

If you haven’t checked it out yet, please surf your way to the Troop’s ever expanding web site. Just point your browser to www.markv.com/troop464. Over the last few months many new pictures from our outings have been added, as well as new Troop resources. The latest addition is a PRIVATE web area where things like the Troop Roster and the phone tree are being kept without giving our phone numbers to the world. To access the private area, click on the "TROOP PRIVATE AREA" link on the home page, then enter the following:

Username: 464member

Password:   ************* (check you paper copy of the newsletter or call Mr. Rozelle @ 883-3845)

Jot these down so you can get in! If you’ve lost that newsletter you were looking for, every letter published can be found and read. Need the latest Troop calendar, you can’t get it more up-to-date than the weekly updated one on our site. After you drop by, please send that little ol’ webmaster (drozelle@socal.rr.com) a note letting him know any comments or suggestions you have so we can make it a useful tool for our Troop’s operation.

EDITOR’S NOTE

A quick note to remind all Scouts and family members that October 7th is our Court of Honor. This is not only for the Scouts, but is for the Family of Troop 464. This consists of all registered Scouts and their families. It is important for parents to be there to recognize what these young men have done and will do. I hope to see you there.
