SCOUTMASTER'S CORNER
Happy summer to everyone. I hope all are having a fun time. I am writing
after returning from summer camp at Emerald Bay and I have to say this is
by far the best summer camp I have ever attended. We sent 31 boys and 5
adult leaders to the camp, which, I was told by our summer camp expert,
Scottie Hastie, is the largest group our Troop has ever sent. Everyone had
a great time doing just about everything while earning merit badges at the
same time. Our Troop made its mark in Emerald Bay by capturing the Best
Troop Award. Thanks, Corky, for your guidance at the camp site. Many
thanks to our leaders (John Luker, Scott Hastie, Brian Crane, Corky
Straus, and Matt Weintraub) who went to make sure out boys had a good
time. All the boys came back with great ones and adventures to relate. I
hope some of them pass them on in our newsletter.
Our Troop also returned in July from White Rafting on the Kern River.
Eleven boys learned and earned the White Water merit badges in kayaks
going down the Kern River. Although a little more water would have made it
a little more challenging, it still was fun going down the river in and
out of the kayak.
Coming up in August, our Troop will be going on a mountain bike camp
out in Malibu Creek P ark. We're going to explore the back part of the
mountains, explore the old M*A*S*H set (I guess most of the Scouts don't
even know what I am talking about), and sleep over in the campgrounds.
This is going to be fun!!!!
Our Troop is still growing. A day before we left for summer camp, two
more boys bridged over into our Troop. I would like to personally welcome
Jesus A and Clint to our Troop. Many thanks to the boys from our Troop
that participated in the ceremony (Scott B, Brian B, Chris B, Mike E,
sorry I can't remember the rest). I would also like to acknowledge the
boys who have been our color guards that have gone to other locations in
the valley representing our Troop. The Valley Interfaith Council Meeting
and Tarzana Presbyterian Church have had Troop 464 color guards present
the colors for their functions. Thanks to Blake S, Brian and Scott B, Mike
E, Stuart H, Jimmy V, Chris B, Kyle B, Chris O, and Trevor N (I hope I
remembered them all) for representing our Troop and doing a great job.
Well, as one can see, our Troop is quite a busy one with a lot more to
come. This summer is going strong with interesting outings and hope to see
all 40 of our Scouts participate. So, see you then.

FUND-RAISER
Please mark your calendars for the El Torito Fund Raiser on Sunday, August
29th Fliers with additional information and coupons to distribute to your
family and friends will be distributed at one of our up-coming meetings.
Please plan on participating, everyone who eats at the El Torito in
Northridge (on Tampa) and uses a coupon will have a portion of the
proceeds donated to our Troop. This is a fun and effective way to earn
money for the Troop.

IN-BOX
Last month we transported 31 boys and 5 leaders to and from San Pedro on
two consecutive weekends, and it went perfectly. Thank you to the check-in
crew, Caroline Balian and Judy Osborne. Thank you to the drivers who
filled their cars and drove so far - Caroline Balian, Dave Ballew, Karen
Osterheldt, Lee Esh, Linnea Luker, Patty Straus, and Judy Weintraub. Also
thanks to our telephone tree Moms who called all of the remaining families
with the arrival times back to West Hills - Judy Osborne, Judy Weintraub,
Judy Yomtov, and Deb Ballew.
We are fortunate to have very dedicated and special people in this
Troop. My family has been a part of the Troop for just over a year now. We
have become so attached to many of you. The Troop has so much to offer in
many different ways as friendship for the boys and adults, a great program
for the boys to gain life-long information and to live by the Scout Law. I
hope everyone in the Troop will help keep the Troop strong and proud.

SCRIBE'S CORNER
We've been talking about the Constitution and the freedom it gives us
as citizens.
But how free are we? What does freedom mean? Does it mean we can do
anything that we want? I think we will all agree that the answer is no.
Freedom of speech for example, does not mean that we can go into a crowded
theater and yell "Fire!" And freedom certainly doesn't mean that
we can steal from people or assault them without fear of being arrested,
tried, and perhaps thrown into jail. As somebody once said, "Your
freedom to swing your fist ends just beyond the tip of my nose."
So what does freedom mean in the sense of the Constitution? It means, I
believe that we are free to live according to the laws of God, free to
worship as we choose, to speak and write the truth as we see it, to choose
our life's work, and to travel where we want to go - and to grant the same
rights to others.
The Constitution does not give us unlimited rights to act without
regard to other people. But it does guarantee us the right to live as free
men in a society whose citizens are equal in the eyes of the law.
Have fun!

EDITOR'S NOTE
I am glad to see that everyone had a good time at summer camp. Now is the
time to look toward the rest of summer. We have so much to look forward
to, so let's all pull together and make it happen.
