SCOUTMASTER’S CORNER

Happy New Year and century to everyone.  I hope everyone, including your computers, had a safe New Year.  Our Troop had a very successful year, ending with a great holiday party at the Straus’ home.  Many thanks to Blake, Corky, and especially Patty for offering your new home for our party.

Troop 464, as usual, is starting off with a bang in the year 2000.  We all went to the Van Nuys courthouse, courtesy of Sheriff Ed Elder, Mike’s dad, and got a first class tour of the courthouse, the weapons used by the sheriffs, and a firsthand look at the lockup facilities.  Thank you, Sheriff Elder for taking time for our Troop, it was quite an experience.

In January, ASM Corky Straus will continue the merit badge work on crime prevention by bringing in a lie detector into our Troop meeting.  This should be good, real good.  Then later this month, we’ll start our physical fitness program to earn that merit badge.

In Feb., our big event will be our annual ski trip to Snow Summit, Big Bear, CA.  All can come whether experienced or novice.  Lessons can be taken while at the slopes.  The accommodations are within walking distance from the ski lift and are very nice.

SUMMER CAMP 2000!!!!!  This summer our Troop is going to the Sequoia National Forest to Camp Chawanakee.  This camp is over 50 years old and is the jewel of the Sequoia Council situated next to Shave Lake east of Fresno.  This camp is unbelievable.  There are over 40 merit badges offered in water sports and land activities.  The cost is $200 per scout, with a payment of $50 to secure a reservation.  Space is limited, so sign up now.

There are just too many things happening in the Troop to write about, so you just have to be part of it.  Our Troop does have a great need for new leaders to go on the outings.  If there are not enough leaders (1 to 5 boys ratio), the outing cannot take place.  Parents new to our Troop are especially encouraged, no experience necessary.

Again, Happy New Year, and I look forward to seeing all of you at our Troop activities.

                Yours in Scouting,z
                Alex Balian, Scoutmaster

CONGRATULATIONS

Heartiest congratulations are in order to Eagle Scout, Chris Balian, for being elected Student Body President of El Camino Real High School.  Here, once again, is another example of the high accomplishments of the scouts of Troop 464.

SKI TRIP

Just a quick note on the ski trip on Feb 25-27.  The total cost is estimated $125-$200, depending on the equipment, lift tickets, and lessons purchased.  Please see John Luker for the details.  The cost will cover lodging, gas, and food as well.  We need the deposit AS SOON AS POSSIBLE in order to hold your child’s place on the trip.  Only 18 spaces are open.  The lodging restricts us to 17 boys and 3 adults.  If family members would like to participate, we’re looking for additional housing…PLEASE CONTACT JOHN LUKER.

IN-BOX

WHAT I EXPECT IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

I expect to see the Troop more involved in the outings.  I want to see the adults participating in the nightly meetings.  Seeing everyone participating together when we have visitors might encourage them to join.

SCOUTING IN THE YEAR 3000

I think in the year 3000 Scouting will be just that.  No Boy Scouts, no Girl Scouts, just Scouts.  The reason why is because Girl Scouts don’t have anything really high adventure.  I know a lot of girls who really like to do the things that Boy Scouts do and I think that the pressures to combine them both is building and eventually Boy Scouts will give way.

                          Kyle L, PL

WHAT I WANT THE WORLD TO BE LIKE IN THE NEXT 100 YEARS

I want the world to be almost the way it is.  Except for the pollution of cars.  If cars were made to not produce pollution, the world would be great.  There are a lot of other problems just in the community, like domestic violence.  But, I’m sure there cannot be peace on earth.

                                Scott B, PL

THOUGHTS FOR NEXT YEAR IN SCOUTING

In every meeting we should have the proper color guard.  We should bring in the American Flag to the front of the room.  The bugler should play the colors and at the end, the bugler should play taps.

               Jarrod W, PL

MILLENNIAL THOUGHTS

The Christian calendar is in its 2000th year.  The Chinese calendar date is 4698, while the Islamic calendar will change to 1421.  The Hebrew calendar will change to 5761 this year.  The Hindu calendar is in its 1922nd year in a cycle that repeats every 12,000 years.  Confused, anyone?

EDITOR’S NOTE

Is it my imagination…or are the sunrises and sunsets in the 21st century nicer than the ones in the 20th

LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT

It is not the critic who counts.
Nor the man who point out
how the strong man stumbles.
Or where the doer of deeds
Could have done better.

The credit belongs to the man
Who is actually in the arena.
Whose face is marred by the
dust and sweat and blood.
Who strives valiantly.

Who errs and comes short
Again and again and who,
At worst, if he fails,
At least fails while daring greatly.

So that his place shall never be
With those cold and timid souls
Who know neither defeat nor victory.
